Steps to Take if You Want to Fix Macbook Performance

October 13, 2020 by Polly Leave a Comment

Macbooks are known for their reliability, but even the newest models are known to have some problems. Yes, a lot depends on how you take care of the computer, but certain issues can happen when you least expect it. And when you end up with an underperforming computer, you may start to think about getting a replacement.

While spending money on a new Mac or another computer is an option, not everyone can afford that. Instead, they need to look for other solutions.

The steps below should be enough to help you fix the most common performance problems on a Macbook. Read and apply the suggestions. You should notice a difference in your Macbook performance right away.

Step #1 – Free up Hard Drive Space

Hard drives are not that popular because they are making way for solid-state drives. Lack of available storage space is a common issue, and do not expect to have a performing Macbook when there are only a few gigabytes of free storage.

Look at what you can delete. Old applications, downloads, and email attachments are the first on the list. Temporary junk files are also worth mentioning, though you would be better off getting an application to get rid of them. Cleanup utility tools are an efficient option. If the application deletes redundant temporary junk automatically, it is worth a purchase.

Step #2 – Buy New Hardware

New hardware is another investment you should consider. Like mentioned in the first step, SSDs are becoming more popular. If there is one thing that more Mac owners should consider replacing, it has to be their hard drives. Solid-state disks enhance the performance significantly, and they are not as expensive as before.

Additional RAM is another go-to idea when talking about new hardware. Similar to SSDs, memory is relatively cheap these days.

Step #3 – Clean Dust Inside the Macbook

You should not stick to just a cooling pad if you are experiencing issues with overheating. It may be that there is too much dust and dirt inside the computer, overworking the internal fans and damaging the internal hardware.

Take the Macbook to a service store if you are afraid of taking the computer apart yourself. Leaving these things in the hands of professionals is usually a sound option.

Step #4 – Scan for Potential Malware

Cybersecurity threats can be a significant hindrance to the overall performance of your Macbook. Even an insignificant virus or malware can lead to noticeable performance problems.

If you cannot figure out where the issue lies, scan the system and see if there are no corrupted files. Get rid of any threats in case your antivirus finds them and use it as a warning sign.

Improve your cybersecurity. In addition to reliable antivirus, enable the firewall and use a virtual private network when browsing the web. Avoid questionable links even if you receive them from people you know. Lastly, install an ad blocker in your internet browser so that it prevents pop-ups and banners that redirect to dangerous landing pages.

Step #5 – Disable Visual Effects

Visual effects are another element of the system that you should disable. Backlit keyboards, animated opening applications for the Dock panel, and visualizers for the music are just a few examples of effects that offer nothing of value. These effects are only consuming system resources and put a strain on Macbook performance. Be more pragmatic and disable visual effects on your computer.

Step #6 – Look for Alternatives for Certain Applications

Some of your applications might not be the most optimal choice. Launch Activity Monitor and sort the processes by relevant resource usage. If you notice that an app or two are consuming more resources than they should, you may want to look for a replacement, or even remove the applications from your computer.

Internet browsers are a good example. Even if you have the most recent Macbook, you may still encounter browser issues because of its poor optimization or an overabundance of installed extensions and add-ons.

Do not go overboard with extensions. Some of them require memory that your system cannot spare. And if the performance is not improving after removing extra extensions or clearing the cache, why not give another browser a go? After all, there are multiple available options.

Step #7 – Declutter Desktop

Desktop clutter is a problem that should not happen. Avoid getting in the habit of keeping your files on the Macbook desktop when they should be on another location. If you find it hard to find what you need, use Spotlight to locate files on the Macbook.

Step #8 – Install Updates

Do not miss updates for the OS or any of the applications you use. New updates introduce performance and stability improvements, patches up security holes, and adds new features. It is recommended to run the most recent version of both the macOS and your applications.
