UAE scientists figure out way to get swarm robots to split up tasks efficiently

February 23, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

Researchers at the Technology Innovation Institute in the UAE are developing a new paradigm for teaching robot swarms how to allocate themselves to tasks efficiently.

The ideas – published in the paper, Group-Size Regulation in Self-organized Aggregation in Robot Swarms – could spark interest in better ways of controlling lots of simple robots to do more complicated tasks independently, with little or no outside communication.

Much prior work has been done to organizing swarms of drones to perform impressive tasks, such as a coordinated light show. But these approaches often relied on centralized coordination, expensive equipment in each drone, or both. GreyOrange expands robotics reach to new European markets

October 11, 2021 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

GreyOrange, a warehouse robotics and automation company, has expanded its GreyMatter operating system and Ranger MoveSmart robots in Active Ants’ e-fulfilment centre in Willebroek, Belgium.

GreyOrange says its solution to modern fulfilment has already been providing higher value and higher levels of efficiency to the Active Ants fulfilment centre in The Netherlands and has since scaled its offering to the Belgian market in preparation for surges in eCommerce demand over the end of year holiday period.

The expansion is the start of a programme to improve efficiencies across several warehouses in Europe. [Read more…] about GreyOrange expands robotics reach to new European markets

GreyOrange implements robots in Active Ants’ warehouse

January 8, 2021 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

GreyOrange has implemented its GreyMatter operating system and Ranger MoveSmart robots in Active Ants’ new e-fulfillment center in Roosendaal, the Netherlands.

The 20,000 square meter warehouse features the GreyMatter Smart Zone Transfer application, utilizing Ranger MoveSmart robots to autonomously move and sort inventory in flexible process flows not possible with fixed conveyors or sorters.

“The GreyOrange robots team with our employees to fulfill customer orders with greater efficiency while also creating a high quality, pleasant work environment. The setup is unique in the world,” said Jeroen Dekker, managing partner at Active Ants. [Read more…] about GreyOrange implements robots in Active Ants’ warehouse

Tiny swarm robots could become first responders after earthquakes

February 9, 2016 by Abdul Montaqim

The 1,000 swarm robots of the Kilobot Project at Harvard University

It seems obvious now that in the event of an earthquake, tiny, swarm robots would be the most effective way of locating survivors in huge piles of rubble through which human emergency workers and first responders cannot make their way or even see.

So obvious that you wonder why they haven’t been developed and even deployed for that purpose already. Certainly the technology seems to be advanced enough – research into the area has been going at an accelerated pace for some time.

Looking at pictures of the collapsed building in Taiwan after the earthquake there on Saturday, there looks to be no way to go in for the emergency workers trying to rescue the survivors. The magnitude-7.6 quake is reported to have killed at least 41 people and more than 100 are said to be trapped in the rubble in that building alone.
