Storage Robots: What Are They?

October 14, 2022 by Mark Allinson

Storing data on several external hard drives can be inconsistent and time-consuming with the increasing accumulation of terabytes of data.

While not a robot in the traditional sense of the word, a storage robot eliminates the need to manually manage data by allowing you to add or change drives automatically when additional storage is required.

Here’s all you need to know about storage robots that protect your data from hard drive crashes and can continuously expand in seconds.

How the Storage Robots Work

The storage robots are entirely automated, with unlimited storage that prevents drive failure and damage to data. If the hard disk fails, the storage robot restates the data to protect it again without needing any human assistance.

The storage robot is an external hard drive that connects to Windows or Mac systems through a USB 2.0 port. It can automatically convert into a single, fully redundant RAID system with up to four SATA disks.

You can see the amount of storage left in the enclosure by checking the lights at the bottom. The green light indicates it is ok, the yellow light flashes when there is no space left, and a red light means it is faulty.

Features of the Storage Robots

The storage robots automatically set up new drives and transfer data between them and can instantly detect and configure up to four SATA drives of any size. This intelligent solution manages the entire data management process, redundancy, disk swapping, and repairing data corruption.

Here are more features of the storage robots:

Self-management

The storage robot has a unique capability to manage itself. Apart from not requiring installation and monitoring capacity, this hard drive can anticipate potential problems with data storage and immediately detect and repair issues that pose a risk to the data.

Self-healing

When a drive fails, the storage robot automatically backs up data to a different disk, provided the system has installed multiple disks, which manage the data until you repair the damaged disk.

Interestingly, while all this is happening, the storage operations continue with reading and writing data from the device, even when replacing each drive.

Type of Storage Robots

Storage robots relieve small businesses and consumers of the time-consuming storage management task, allowing them to focus on other professional or personal duties.

They offer a leading-edge user experience for external storage devices, especially regarding the setup process, automatic data protection, and the ability to expand capacity in the future. Here is an example of a storage robot.

Drobo

Drobo is the initial storage robot, an efficient and easy-to-manage solution for storing data. You only need to plug it in, connect it to the drives, and proceed as you would with any external hard disk.

The best part about this storage robot is that it is automatically protected, infinitely scalable, and does not require complex setup or management.

This system automatically monitors and fixes problems affecting data and anticipates the majority of what could go wrong with digital storage.

Drobo can work with any type, size, speed, and capacity of regular 3.5″ SATA internal drives, which slide into place without tools or carriers. These drives are sold separately, and you can find them in most electronics stores.

The Bottom Line

The storage robot is a perfect solution if you need a large amount of data storage, and it functions as both the primary and backup hard drive. It works three times faster than the standard hard drive, and the self-management and self-healing features offer a plug-in solution that requires minimal maintenance.

A storage robot offers you convenience, and it’s worth the price.
