Can You Use Health Insurance to Cover Car Accident Injuries?

January 21, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

The last thing anyone wants is to be involved in a car accident. You need to deal with the damage, physical injuries, and filing claims. Also, you have to worry about paying your medical bills.

Can your health insurance cover car accident-related injuries? Or can it deny a claim caused by a car accident? Generally, many different types of insurance can pay for the cost of medical care in a car accident, including MedPay (medical payments), PIP (personal injury protection), and health insurance.

Here’s what you need to know about using your health insurance to cover auto accident injuries.

When to Use Health Insurance?

If you don’t have MedPay or PIP coverage on your car insurance, you can use your health insurance to pay for the cost of hospital care due to a car accident. Check with your insurer to determine what’s covered and what isn’t. You may be able to use your health insurance to pay for:

  • ambulance transportation
  • emergency room services
  • diagnostic tests
  • hospitalization
  • surgical procedures

Health insurance will likely cover more of your expenses than your car insurance would. Health insurance may also cover medical bills that aren’t related to the accident, such as prescription medications and doctor visits.

Be sure to contact your health insurance company as soon as possible after the accident. You’ll also want to contact your car insurance company, even if you don’t think the accident was your fault. Car insurance will help cover the costs of repairing or replacing your car.

Also, keep in mind that your health insurance company may require you to pay a deductible or co-payment for these services. What’s more, not all car accidents will qualify for coverage under your health insurance policy. Be sure to read your policy carefully to find out what’s covered.

You May Need To Submit An Application For Reimbursement

If you use your health insurance to pay for car accident injuries, you may need to submit an application for reimbursement. It is because health insurance providers typically do not cover car accident injuries.

You may need to submit a claim to the insurance company in order to receive reimbursement for the costs of your car accident injuries.

It is important to note that the process of submitting a reimbursement claim can be complex. You may need to provide documentation of your car accident injuries and medical expenses.

Also, the insurance company may take a while to process your claim. So, you should plan and submit your reimbursement application as soon as possible.

If you are unsure how to submit a reimbursement claim, it is best to speak with an attorney specializing in insurance claims. You should always consult with an attorney after a car accident, regardless of whether or not you plan to seek reimbursement for your injuries.

An attorney can help you understand your rights and advise you on the best course of action to take.

What Are The Exceptions?

Your health insurance may not always cover your car accident injuries. For example, if you were walking and got hit by a car, your health insurance would not cover the medical expenses related to that accident, but your car insurance would.

Similarly, if you were in a car accident while driving or riding as a passenger in someone else’s car, and you were not at fault for the accident, your health insurance may not cover your injuries but the car insurance of the driver who caused the accident would.

If you are injured in a car accident that is someone else’s fault, but you were driving or riding in an uninsured car, your health insurance may not cover your injuries. Also, if you are injured in a car accident and the other driver does not have insurance, your health insurance will likely not cover your medical expenses.

You may have to sue the other driver in order to recover money for your injuries. Alternatively, you may be able to file a claim with the driver’s insurance company. The process of suing another driver can be complicated, so it’s essential to speak with an attorney.

These are just a few examples of when health insurance will not cover car accident injuries. If you are unsure whether or not your health insurance will help pay for your medical expenses, be sure to speak with a representative from your insurance company.

To Sum It Up

If you have been injured in a car accident, it is crucial to seek medical attention right away. Your health insurance may cover the cost of your injuries, but you will need to file a claim with your auto insurance company.

Your auto insurance company should be able to help throughout this process. Consider Assurance car insurance to get the best package of protections.
