Top 3 Predictions on the Future of Automation in Warehousing

December 1, 2021 by Mark Allinson Leave a Comment

In recent years, warehouses worldwide have adapted advanced technologies to automate processes to enhance efficiency.

In fact, a report by Research and Markets reveals that the global warehouse automation market will reach $30.99 billion in 2025, according to PR Newswire. But that’s not all there is in warehouse automation.

There are plenty of reasons to use automated warehousing for your small business, such as cost savings, improved services, and increased customer satisfaction. If you’re looking for ways to enhance your warehouse processes, you might want to learn more about the predictions on the future of automation in warehousing discussed below.

The Rise of Robots

Robots have become increasingly popular in warehouses due to their ability to handle millions of orders and thousands of objects every week. Some tasks robots take up in warehouses include picking, packing, batching, sorting, transporting, security, and inspections.

As distribution centers look to improve efficiency in their warehouses, robots will continue to gain traction. In fact, experts predict that there will be 50,000 robotic warehouses by 2025. As a result, mobile robots, drones, and cobots in warehouses will become the norm.

Each of these warehouse robotic machines comes with appealing features that enhance the distribution of items. For example, mobile robots can replace conventional conveyors with portable and affordable plug-and-play systems for adequate space utilization.

On the other hand, drones can move above objects in any location in the warehouse independently. This aspect makes drones ideal for conducting aerial inventory scanning, reaching hard-to-reach places in the warehouse, and inspecting stock.

Increased Use of Automated Machines

Thanks to advancements in machine learning, big data, and remote systems, warehouses can automate forklifts, conveyors, pallet movers, shelving, and local delivery vehicles. These computerized machines exist in modern warehouses, and they offer numerous benefits like increased efficiency, reduced labor costs, and speed. Using automated warehouse machines like forklifts also guarantees worker safety.

According to personal injury lawyers, no matter how careful employees are when operating machinery, especially plant and vehicles, they are prone to injuries. In most cases, workers end up hiring attorneys specializing in work place accidents to file injury claims against their employers.

With this in mind, consider investing in automated forklifts to reduce risks. Since these robotic machines take up repetitive and strenuous tasks like picking and transporting heavy machines, they make work easier.

Internet of Things

Market experts predict IoT will become an integral part of warehousing throughout 2021 and beyond, thanks to improved sensors and reduced costs. Typically, you can utilize IoT in various ways through the internet and wireless networks.

For example, you can connect multiple warehouse devices by adding sensors. This move transforms warehouse machines into intelligent devices that communicate in real-time without human intervention.

Additionally, leveraging the internet of things in warehousing helps you connect and coordinate your distribution facility. That way, workers, robots, managers, and automated vehicles know the exact location of items and monitor them throughout their journey.

With more and more warehouses embracing technological advancement, automation in warehousing will surge. As a result, robotic warehouses will become popular, with operators depending more on drones, mobile robots, and cobots to handle warehouse tasks.

Automated machines like innovative conveyors, forklifts, and pallet movers will also increase, and IoT devices and standards will be essential in warehouses.
