Einride and Oatly reveal results of logistics test with electric trucks and freight mobility platform

Autonomous and electric truck developer Einride and large-scale drinks manufacturer Oatly have revealed the initial results of the two companies’ joint logistics operations.

Einride had integrated its vehicles into Oatly’s transport routes at its production sites and warehouses in the Swedish cities of Helsingborg, Landskrona, and Småland’s Tingsryd.

Oatly is one of the first companies in the world to operate a full fleet of Einride electric trucks daily, on-site.

Oatly recently began using Einride’s electric trucks on its delivery routes from each of its Swedish production sites. So far, the trucks have driven over 8,600 electric km and as a result have saved over 10,500 kg of CO2 compared to diesel.

Simon Broadbent, supply chain director at Oatly, says: “Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, and we work hard to lower our emissions across the board. This includes our emissions for transports, which is why we are now shifting to electrical vehicles, which reduces our climate footprint by 87 percent on these routes.

“Together with Einride, we are helping drive a needed change in the transportation industry in showing that new, innovative solutions can actually be implemented.”

The collaboration between the two sustainability-minded companies was first announced in May 2020 and took less than six months to come to fruition.

It currently runs around the clock at Oatly’s Swedish facilities, and is coordinated by the Einride intelligent freight mobility platform for maximum efficiency and emissions reduction.

Robert Falck, CEO and founder of Einride, says: “This partnership debunks the myth that electric trucks can not handle heavy loads.

“When supported by intelligent software, heavy loads and long distances are entirely possible, and our freight mobility platform has proven this already with its ability to coordinate all details of the Oatly vehicle transport in real-time.

“We measure minute-by-minute, everything from drivers, pallets, loading bays, route choices, and loading points to make electric trucks both smart and profitable for our partners.”

The drivers in the trucks utilized by Oatly come from one of Skåne’s largest haulers, Erikssons Åkeri AB, a carrier partner of Einride since July of this year.

Broadbent says: “We are excited about the progress of this partnership so far, and the sustainability impact we’re seeing already from electric transports. As a result, we will be investigating possible expansions with Einride pending a successful execution and performance of this pilot.”
