How to Know What Type of Home Security System to Get

July 24, 2020 by Polly Leave a Comment

Are you looking into getting a home security system for your home, but aren’t sure which type to get?

Don’t worry – this is a problem many people face.

There are many types of home security systems available that offer a variety of coverage.

In this article, we’ll help you decide which type of security system may be the best fit for your home. We’ll go over the types, costs, and benefits of different security systems. Keep reading to learn more.

The types and coverage of home security systems

There are different types of home security systems for you to consider. You can choose from self-monitoring options such as cameras and sensors, or you can have a company monitor your home for you.

According to a survey, 70 percent of respondents have some type of security measure in place at their homes, so any option you choose would put you in line with many other Americans.

In the case of self-monitoring, there are many security systems you can purchase. You can have cameras, door and window sensors, and alarms installed in your home.

Many of these systems offer monitoring through your phone, where you can disable alarms, get notifications, see recordings, and more.

Depending on your budget and the coverage you want, this option ranges from a few simple cameras set up to a full-blown self-monitoring system.

If you don’t want to monitor your home yourself, you can opt to have a security company monitor your home for you. Just as you would with a self-monitoring system, a company will come and install similar types of accessories throughout your home.

The only difference is that the company will have the ability to monitor and notify you of any break-ins, and may have faster response times.

The cost of home security systems

You’ll need to know your budget before purchasing a home security system. If you don’t have a lot of disposable income to work with, you may want to opt for the option of purchasing a few cameras to set up around your home, or sensors to put on your doors and windows.

If you have a higher budget to work with, you can look into either self-monitoring or monitored security systems. This option often requires installation fees as well as monthly fees to have continuous monitoring.

A self-monitoring system may be cheaper than a monitored system, but still offer a similar type of security. You’ll also need to consider the size, type, and location of your home as well.

Single cameras may range from $35 to hundreds of dollars per camera. If you decide to work with a company, installation fees may be up to $200 or more, and monthly fees may range from $15 to $40 a month.

The benefits of home security systems

There are many benefits to having a home security system. Some of these benefits include:

  • Peace of mind
  • Proof of theft
  • Safety of you and your family
  • Preventing break-ins
  • Evidence of trespassing
  • Quick response from local authorities
  • Fast notifications

Home security systems make you and your family safer, and are definitely worth the cost. This is especially true if you live in a risky neighborhood, or live in a home with high-value items. But still, home security is beneficial to anybody who uses it.

While the chances of a break-in are low, you’ll thank yourself for installing a system in your home when something does happen. You can learn more about how to shop for home security systems here.

When it comes to deciding on which type of system to get, however, you’ll have to take the information presented and figure out which works best for your situation.

As mentioned previously, home size and location matter. You’ll also have to take your budget into consideration. Once you weigh all the factors, then you can decide which route to take.
