4 Ways Robotics and AI Are Transforming Design and Creatives

March 10, 2020 by Polly

While AI and robotics have made waves in several industries, it would seem inconceivable to the uninitiated for robots and intelligent machines to make a mark in the creatives sector. How could systems be taught creativity?

In fact, when researchers from the Oxford Martin School ranked 702 occupations according to their susceptibility to computerization, jobs that center around creativity were least in danger.

Designers, curators, artists, choreographers, dancers, musicians, singers, writers, and authors were among those less likely to be replaced by robots.

But the robot takeover argument does not only include sentiments of agreement and disagreement. There is something in the middle, and that is what we will discuss here.

In essence, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) can serve as essential tools for humans to effectively and efficiently do their jobs, especially in the creative field, where human input is indispensable. As such, here are four ways robotics and AI are transforming this sector.

1. Assisting in the Idea Development Process

Google’s AutoDraw is among the tech giant’s many AI experiments. AutoDraw, in particular, helps people make their drawings look better using machine learning (ML) algorithms.

When you draw a triangle, for example, AutoDraw suggests different objects, ranging from the different types of triangles and variations of a tent to varying styles of dresses, and castles.

While this may sound simple, it drives home the fact that AI can help artists by suggesting ideas. The idea development process of every artist might vary, but there will always be times when inspiration from the outside is needed, and AI could be a rich source of ideas.

2. Providing Variations

One thing that intelligent machines can do well is to produce variations of a given design. For instance, we’ve seen design wizards that can automatically generate a book cover based on a given description.

By utilizing artificial neural networks, these design machines can provide variations of photo effects, color schemes, and font styles, which, as a result, allows streamlining the publishing process.

3. Automating Repetitive Tasks

When an artist or a designer comes up with ideas that require the application of repetitive processes, robots can come to the rescue. Such was the case of artists Benjamin Maus and Prokop Bartoníček in 2016.

They presented an artwork that tells about the history of a river with the help of a robotic apparatus that sorted pebbles from the stream based on their geological age. The robot picked up one stone at a time, identified its age, and placed it in the right location.

The world of marketing and advertising is also in need of the automation that AI can provide. In ad design, for instance, instead of repetitively enlisting the design team to create basic ads based on different consumer reactions, organizations can use AI to curate ads into a predefined template automatically.

As a result, the design team could dedicate more time to coming up with more advertising ideas.

4. Innovating Presentations and Outputs

For sure, canvases and other traditional materials used in artwork will continue to live on. However, robotics has provided a whole new way of presenting artwork and designs, particularly with the advances made in 3D printing technology.

Recent developments showed that 3D printing could work not just on plastics but also ceramics, metals, and even yarn.

Full of ideas

The design and creative industry comprises different sectors that prosper because of ingenuity. It includes advertising, architecture, arts and crafts, design, fashion, film, performing arts, and publishing.

When we think of these sectors, we immediately think of people whose minds are full of ideas just waiting to be put onto canvas, paper, or any other medium.

But it’s also high time that we think about a technology that could help creative people make short work of tasks. For one, AI can help augment the ever-challenging idea development process, while robotics can do away with manual and repetitive tasks.

These technologies can thus serve as essential tools that would enable the industry to move forward and focus on other crucial aspects.
