Intel drone solutions modernise US bridge inspections

December 14, 2018 by Anna

Intel has collaborated with two US departments of transportation to improve bridge inspections, supplementing manual inspections of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge connecting Ohio and Kentucky and the Stone Arch Bridge in Minnesota.

Throughout the inspections, Intel’s advanced automated commercial drone hardware and software solutions increased efficiency and produced more reliable data in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods.

More than 600,000 bridges are in the U.S., and nearly 10 percent of them are currently rated structurally deficient or obsolete. Each bridge is structurally unique and needs regular inspections to achieve safety requirements for general use.

Kollmorgen servo drives ‘simulate road behavior’

Kollmorgen AKM2G Launch copy

IMS Gear relies on Kollmorgen’s motion control solution for its test bench technology – AKM servo motors for simulating loads: one of the typical tasks of the AKM servo motors on the test benches at IMS Gear involves simulating loads. By Thomas Sautter, sales manager Germany, Kollmorgen

Employees in the test room constantly face the challenge of testing components and assemblies before the peripheral equipment associated with these – that is, the subsequent overall product – is even available for real.

When employees are testing power assisted steering, for instance, driving situations need to be simulated precisely even though the associated car is not even on the market yet.  [Read more…] about Kollmorgen servo drives ‘simulate road behavior’

Kvaser, a specialist Controller Area Network development, has launched its new “Air Bridge Light HS”, a high-performance wireless CAN bridge to connect CAN networks.

Comprising a preconfigured pair of plug-and-play units, with integrated antennas and rugged housings, Kvaser says the Air Bridge Light HS provides “a rapid way of exchanging raw CAN data”.

A CAN bus is a robust vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other in applications without a host computer.  [Read more…] about Kvaser launches new wireless CAN bridge to make ‘light work’ of network connection

Siemens is the world’s first company to gain TÜV SÜD certification for the secure system integration of process automation and drive solutions in compliance with the international IEC 62443-2-4 standards.

The integration projects, verified on the basis of two standard solutions in the oil & gas processing industry and in a waste incineration plant, have been certified in conformity with IEC 62443-2-4 and -3-3 and were implemented using the Simatic PCS 7 process control system.

The projects involved process automation, drive solutions and comprehensive security measures and functions designed to deliver secure plant operation. [Read more…] about Siemens becomes ‘world’s first’ to gain new TÜV SÜD certification

New Intel camera adds 6 degrees of freedom tracking

December 14, 2018 by Anna

Intel has introduced a new addition to the Intel RealSense D400 series: the Intel RealSense Depth Camera D435i.

This latest camera includes a new inertial measurement unit (IMU) that enables developers to create solutions with more advanced depth-sensing and tracking capabilities for applications including drones, robotics and gaming.

The camera adds 6 degrees of freedom data from an internal IMU that combines a variety of linear accelerometers with gyroscopes to detect both rotation and translation for three axes, as well as pitch, yaw and roll.
