Robots are forever: How a robot diamond cutter could change a market already disrupted by lab-grown diamonds

January 3, 2025 by David Edwards

About six years ago, the Scientific and Technical Research Center for Diamonds, in Antwerp, Belgium, demonstrated a highly sophisticated robotic system that can automatically cut or polish diamonds in a fraction of the time it takes the most experienced human diamond cutter to do it by hand – “10 to 20 times faster”, according to its makers.

Called the “Fenix” robot, the system is incredibly well designed and it’s no surprise that it generated a lot of interest. So much so that a company called HS Technology, based in the United States, ended up acquiring the entire organisation – it bought the Scientific and Technical Research Center for Diamonds.

Not much was heard about Fenix after that, but the latest is that HD Blueprint, a company specialising in the development of diamond cutting and polishing technologies, now owns the company and machine. How Plasma Polishing is Revolutionizing the Future of Surface Finishing

September 5, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Surface finishing is a crucial process in many industries, from medical to automotive, aimed at improving the functionality and aesthetics of a material’s surface.

Traditional methods like grinding and polishing have their limitations, especially when it comes to treating surfaces with high precision and without deformation.

Plasma polishing, an innovative technique, offers a solution to these challenges, delivering not only more precise results but also being more environmentally friendly. In this article, we explain how plasma polishing is revolutionizing the future of surface finishing.

Flexiv launches ‘revolutionary’ force-controlled parallel robot

February 4, 2023 by Mai Tao

Flexiv, a builder of general-purpose robotics solutions, has released the latest addition to its product portfolio, the Moonlight adaptive parallel robot.

Flexiv says Moonlight is the world’s first force-controlled parallel robot and is ideal for applications that require precise motion and force control, such as screw fastening, ultra-accurate loading, and polishing. It adds the new machine is “revolutionary”.

Incorporating Flexiv’s innovative force control technology, Moonlight can precisely measure force down to 0.1 N so even delicate objects can be handled. This makes tasks polishing and sanding uneven surfaces possible while guaranteeing output quality and practically eliminating workpiece damage. OnRobot launches robotic sanding system

September 24, 2020 by Elaine

OnRobot has launched OnRobot Sander, an all-electric random orbital sander for automated finishing applications, including sanding and polishing.

Traditional sanding automation solutions often require a background in robotics to implement and maintain. With the launch of OnRobot Sander, manufacturers now have access to a complete out-of-the-box sanding tool that’s easy to use with all major collaborative and lightweight industrial robots.

The complete Sander package incorporates everything OnRobot customers need to get their sanding application started quickly and easily: a plug-and-play sanding tool, a variety of standard sanding and polishing pads, easy-to-use programming software, an optional force/ torque sensor and a Grit Changer that enables automated switching between different sanding grits without operator intervention.
