Comau provides Geely with ‘powerful’ multi-robot solution

January 24, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Industrial automation specialist Comau has provided Geely, one of China’s largest automotive brands, with a ‘powerful process solution’ using multiple robots to install motor rotors

The rapid market evolution of new energy vehicles (NEV) is revolutionizing electric drive systems, propelling motor assemblies toward unprecedented levels of integration, higher voltage capabilities, and enhanced power outputs.

As the driver of energy conversion, the electric motor plays a pivotal role in determining a vehicle’s efficiency, reliability, and overall performance.

At the heart of every motor are the stator and rotor, two critical components that define its operational excellence. [Read more…] about Comau provides Geely with ‘powerful’ multi-robot solution

Spare humans: Top 10 humanoids and androids from sci-fi films

January 9, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Humanoid robots have been central characters in many movies from the very beginning of the film industry, and have regularly featured prominently throughout this time. And they have never – or at least rarely – failed to kindle a certain kind of feeling that combines fascination with a slightly unsettling sense of fear.

Now it seems there will be an increase in the number of films featuring human-like robots. Two major films in two years – Subservience, starring Megan Fox, last year, and Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher, this year – might not represent a deluge, but we think this is a sign of things to come.

What I mean is that I believe there will be many more films featuring humanoid robots and androids from now on, mainly because we as a society are increasingly having to deal with artificial intelligence which lives inside computers but communicates with us all the time, as well as actual AI machines in the our three-dimensional physical world that move and talk and walk and drive us around – often referred to as “embodied artificial intelligence”. New book by academic experts questions whether humans are ready for the ethical challenges of AI and robots

January 9, 2025 by Mark Allinson

As artificial intelligence rapidly advances, robots are becoming smarter and more human-like, presenting new ethical challenges. In a new book, scholars from Japan, Italy, the United States, and other countries examine the legal, policy, and regulatory issues surrounding human-robot interaction.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-enabled robots are becoming a bigger part of our daily lives. Real-time, flexible interactions between humans and robots are no longer just science fiction.

As robots become smarter and more human-like in both behavior and appearance, they are transforming from mere tools to potential partners and social entities.

This rapid evolution presents significant challenges to our legal and ethical frameworks, including concerns about privacy, safety, and regulation in the context of AI and robots. Using robots in nursing homes linked to ‘higher employee retention, better patient care’

January 9, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Robot use is associated with increased employment and employee retention, improved productivity and a higher quality of care, according to a new study

Facing high employee turnover and an aging population, nursing homes have increasingly turned to robots to complete a variety of care tasks, but few researchers have explored how these technologies impact workers and the quality of care.

A new study from a University of Notre Dame expert on the future of work finds that robot use is associated with increased employment and employee retention, improved productivity and a higher quality of care. The research has important implications for the workplace and the long-term care industry.

Yong Suk Lee, associate professor of technology, economy and global affairs at the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs, was the lead author for the study, published in Labour Economics.
