Boston Dynamics gives new powers to truck-unloading robot

The increasing demand for organ transplants paints a dire picture of the global health industry. According to the Global Observatory of Donation and Transplantation, 2021 witnessed an overwhelming 144,301 organ transplants, marking an 11.3 percent surge from 2020 with this number gradually increasing each year. Alarmingly, out of this figure, approximately two-thirds were kidney transplants.

In the United States alone, out of almost 90,000 US citizens on the wait list for a kidney transplant in a given year, only around 25,000 receive one, with 17 individuals losing their battle against time every day, succumbing to the consequences of extended waiting periods. Manufacturing startup StilFold has sold its first “industrial origami” metal-folding machine to industry, in a deal with Georgia Tech’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the USA.

Studies suggest manufacturing accounts for more than half of the total environmental impact of the US economy. Stockholm-based StilFold is pioneering the use of curve folding and robotics to build things more sustainably.

The company has created groundbreaking technology which involves the use of a specialist robotic cell and computational design software to fold flat sheet metal over curves to create complex, light and sustainable new structures, using minimal component parts. Continental acquires Kinexon’s robot operating systems division

Continental has acquired Kinexon’s specialist division for on-board operating systems for the intelligent control of autonomous mobile robots (AMR), thereby strengthening its own position in the strategic growth field of mobile robotics.
