Sales and production of industrial robots in China continues to grow apace

The industrial robotics and automation sector is continuing to grow fast in China. 

The latest report to confirm this trend comes from the communist Chinese government propaganda outlet Xhinua.

Robots nab $100,000 in art competition while human artists continue to starve

A robotic painting system called “CloudPainter” has won the 2018 art competition run by RobotArt.org. 

Judges say CloudPainter was “able to paint evocative portraits with varying degrees of abstraction”.

Nidec-Shimpo launches new versions of its S-Cart automated guided vehicle

Nidec-Shimpo has launched new versions of its automated guided vehicle, the S-Cart. (See video below.)

The company says it will begin shipping the new model of AGV – equipped with a “Follow-Me” function – as soon as possible.

Motors giant Nidec enters into $260 million joint venture with automaker PSA

Nidec, one of the world’s largest suppliers of motors and other industrial components, has entered into a joint venture with global automaker PSA Group.

The “Nidec-PSA emotors” joint venture has been created by Groupe PSA and Nidec to initiate the design of “future electric motors”.

Shigenobu Nagamori, CEO of Nidec, and Carlos Tavares, CEO of Groupe PSA, endorsed the establishment of Nidec-PSA emotors, saying the new business will be “dedicated to the design, development, manufacture and sale of electric traction motors”.  [Read more…] about Motors giant Nidec enters into $260 million joint venture with automaker PSA

Zhen Robotics develops mobile delivery robot e-commerce in China

A company called Zhen Robotics has unveiled a small, wheeled autonomous robot that can be used to make deliveries of packages to the home. (Main picture and video below.)

The vehicle, which is about the size of a small suitcase, is called “Little Yellow Horse”, and is developed with the backing of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, Imperial College in London, UK, Tsinghua University, in China, and Alibaba, the well-known e-commerce giant.

Zhen Robot describes itself as an artificial intelligence company which develops such things as precision navigation technology for robots, intelligent control technology, and environmental modeling technology, which refers to deep learning methods for identifying pedestrians and dangerous objects to enable robots to safely avoids obstacles.  [Read more…] about Zhen Robotics develops mobile delivery robot e-commerce in China

You might expect that would not affect manufacturing because many jobs in the sector may require minimal training.

Omron agrees sale of its Laserfront business

Omron has agreed the sale of its Laserfront business to Towa Corporation, manufacturer of semiconductor molding machines.

Omron and Towa reached the agreement to transfer all those stocks of Omron Laserfront owned by Omron to Towa. The stock transfer will be completed on August 1, 2018.

Belt & Road: Much more than a revival of the ancient Silk Road

A huge amount has been written already about the so-called Belt and Road initiative or project, but it looks like this is just the beginning. 

On the face of it, the Belt and Road refers to a plan to create a logistics network that brings together Europe and Asia with road, rail, and sea routes.

It’s an idea China came up with, and its leaders have made enthusiastic pronouncements about it, even though the project will cost an estimated $1 trillion over the next decade or two. Thailand and South Korea sign new trade and investment deals

Thailand and South Korea have been working closely to increase bilateral trade and investment.

The two countries are among the largest manufacturers of advanced technological products in the world.

Suning unveils self-driving heavy-duty truck

Suning Logistics has completed driving tests for its autonomous heavy-duty truck, which the company calls “Strolling Dragon”, in Shanghai, China.

The company says the completion marks another milestone in its plan to offer fully-automated logistics solutions.

Strolling Dragon is the largest unmanned truck in Suning Logistics’ automated fleet, boasting Level-4 self-driving capabilities; it is highly automated, and is able to operate without human input within pre-programmed parameters.  [Read more…] about Suning unveils self-driving heavy-duty truck
