Indian industrial giant Tata partners with MassRobotics to accelerate innovation in robotics

March 4, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Tata Consultancy Services, one of the world’s largest IT services, consulting, and business solutions providers, has agreed a collaborative engagement with MassRobotics, the largest independent robotics hub in the world dedicated to advancing robotics and connected devices.

Through this collaboration, TCS aims to support MassRobotics’ mission to foster robotics innovation by engaging with startups, researchers, and industry leaders exploring applications focused on sectors such as retail, travel, transportation, hospitality, and consumer products.

As part of this initiative, TCS will have an on-site presence at MassRobotics’ facility in Boston. This will allow TCS to directly collaborate with innovative robotics startups, research institutions, and industry leaders.

TCS will engage with MassRobotics’ community by providing technical expertise, mentorship, and industry insights while gaining exposure to emerging robotics trends and innovations, such as physical AI and robotics for specialized sectors.

The collaboration will leverage TCS’ deep expertise in AI, machine learning, and automation to advance robotics technologies for both technical and commercial applications across industries where robots enhance human work.

The alliance strengthens TCS’ commitment to shaping the future of robotics by addressing the rising demand for automation across industries.

The robotics market continues to expand, with the International Federation of Robotics projecting over 3 million units to be installed around the world in 2025.

By combining TCS’ technology expertise, contextual knowledge, and global reach with MassRobotics’ innovation ecosystem, the initiative seeks to drive the development of cutting-edge robotics solutions that meet evolving business needs.

Tom Ryden, executive director, MassRobotics, says: “We are excited to partner with TCS to bring innovative robotics solutions to market faster and more efficiently.

“TCS’ global reach and deep technological expertise will complement our mission to support robotics innovation and create new avenues for growth in industries that are adopting robotics solutions.”

This collaboration is a testament to TCS’ mission to foster technological advancement in North America. With more than 46,000 associates and 32 sales, delivery, and data center locations across North America, TCS is a trusted partner for half of the Fortune 500.

Notable initiatives in the region include the launch of the TCS Bringing Life to Things IoT and Digital Engineering lab in Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as TCS Pace Port co-innovation centers at Cornell Tech in New York City, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and at TCS’ campus in Toronto, Canada.

This year, TCS was recognized in Fortune Magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies list, reaffirming its position as a leading employer in North America.

Krishnan Ramanujam, president – consumer business group, TCS, says: “As robotics continues to gain traction across industries—from retail to transportation—the potential to transform businesses and society is immense.

“Working alongside MassRobotics, TCS aims to accelerate the development of cutting-edge solutions that will not only streamline operations but also deliver new levels of innovation and efficiency.

“Together, we are helping to shape a world where robotics and intelligent automation empower industries and enrich lives.”

The project will focus on several key initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the robotics sector, including:

Joint Research and Development Initiatives: Collaborating on new robotics technologies to address emerging challenges in automation and AI.

Industry Solutions: Developing industry-specific applications for robotics in sectors such as retail, travel, transportation, hospitality, and consumer products, and more.

Startup Ecosystem: Supporting early-stage robotics startups with access to TCS’ global resources, technology platforms, and expertise.

Innovation and Commercialization: Helping bridge the gap between innovative research and real-world applications, ensuring that groundbreaking technologies reach the market faster.

TCS has developed strong capabilities in robotics, leveraging automation and AI, to help clients optimize operations and enhance productivity. It has expertise in developing autonomous robots and collaborative robots (cobots) that can work alongside humans to improve efficiency and safety.

TCS continues to invest in the future of robotics, positioning itself as a trusted partner for organizations seeking to harness the potential of robotics to address complex business challenges.
