A frightening number of robots are set to overwhelm and dominate humanity, if the prediction of a powerful, oil-rich Arab state minister is anything to go by.

Speaking at a high-level meeting of globally important government officials, including Elon Musk, Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi (pictured with Musk in main image), minister of cabinet affairs of the United Arab Emirates and chairman of the World Government Summit, suggests an astonishing “20 billion robots” will bash human beings into shape, in a manner of speaking.

Under the theme of “Shaping Future Governments”, Gergawi posits that an unprecedented number of robots will reshape human lifestyles, human labour markets and human societies – effectively making the world robot-oriented, rather than human-centred. Beijing plans to host the World Humanoid Robot Games this year, said Yin Yong during the third session of the 16th Beijing Municipal People’s Congress on Tuesday.

Is there too much hype around robotics and automation?

When our website, RoboticsAndAutomationNews.com, started 10 years ago, we were probably the only dedicated website reporting on robotics and automation, especially in the industrial sector, more specifically, about industrial robotic arms.

At the time, industrial robotics was a niche topic, generating little or no attention in mainstream media. Our interest was in the technology side of robotics first, and investment opportunities second. This enabled us to carve out a unique space, and now, our interests are accurately reflected in the composition of our audience – largest group is engineers and roboticists, the second-largest, investors.

Kuka robots take centre stage at ‘avant garde’ rock concert

Kuka robotic arms took centre stage at a spectacular rock concert performed by Stromae, whose shows have been described by music media as “avant garde and immersive”.

Belgian musician Stromae rose to fame with global hits such as “Alors on danse”, which translates as “So we dance”, and his live shows are spectacular and colourful, and feature numerous advanced technologies.

AI-generated images: Is this the future of art?

Dictionary definitions of “art” are many and varied, but for people of a certain age – let’s say around 60 – art used to mean paintings and sculptures… pretty much exclusively.

But over those 60 years – starting around 30 years ago – art started to mean different things, although those “different” artistic expressions still often incorporated the traditional modes of expression – painting and sculpting.

One of those “different” things that came to constitute art was “installation art”, which is usually a relatively large-scale work – taking up one whole gallery room or more. Installation art uses mixed media to create an immersive experience for people to walk through and perhaps interact with or even be an essential part of.

Sotheby’s auctions painting by a robot for $1.124 million

The New York branch of Sotheby’s, one of the world’s most prestigious auction houses when it comes to fine art and artefacts, has just sold a painting by a robot for more than $1.124 million.

The painting, called “AI God – Portrait of Alan Turing”, was produced by the humanoid robot Ai-Da, which readers of this website will probably know from our previous coverage, and which has its own website.

The estimated sale price of the mixed-media work was listed as being between $120,000 to $180,000 by Sotheby’s, which clearly did not accurately predict how much revenue the work would generate.

Libiao Robotics aims to use automation to help smooth Singles’ Day peak online shopping demand

Originating at China’s Nanjing University in 1993 as a sort of anti-Valentine’s Day, Singles’ Day is celebrated by unmarried people in China on November 11th. The occasion falls on that date because 11/11 represents four ones, or four singles, standing together.

Single people mark the occasion by spoiling and treating themselves to gifts and presents, but it wasn’t until Chinese eCommerce giant Alibaba chose the date to offer heavily discounted merchandise on its platform for 24 hours, starting at midnight on November 11, 2009, that Singles’ Day became a major commercial event.

And although it is not officially recognised as a public holiday in China, it has become the largest online shopping day in the world.
