Home-improvement retailer Bauhaus has deployed an automated inbound logistics system from XYZ Robotics at its logistics center in Krefeld, Germany, combining container unloading, carton identification and palletizing in a single automated line.
The installation is described by XYZ Robotics as the first European deployment of its fully automated inbound system and is now operating in a live production environment.
At the beginning of the process, XYZ Robotics’ RockyOne unloading robot enters shipping containers and removes cartons of varying sizes. The cartons are then transferred along the line, where a barcode identification system determines how individual items should be handled.
The system subsequently palletizes the cartons according to Bauhaus’ specified pallet configurations.
According to XYZ Robotics, the complete process – from unloading the container through to building the finished pallets – operates automatically, with workers primarily required to exchange completed pallets.
The company says the installation is designed for continuous operation and reduces the amount of manual handling traditionally required during inbound logistics operations.
The project is particularly notable because container unloading remains one of the more difficult areas of warehouse automation. Unlike highly structured processes elsewhere in a distribution center, cartons arriving inside shipping containers can differ considerably in dimensions, weight, orientation and stacking pattern.
XYZ Robotics’ system combines robotic unloading with downstream identification and palletizing rather than treating the individual processes as separate automation projects.
The Krefeld installation also expands XYZ Robotics’ presence in the European market. The company has established a local team in Germany to support customers through system planning, commissioning and after-sales service.
For Bauhaus, the deployment provides an example of robotic automation moving further upstream in the warehouse, with goods being handled automatically almost immediately after arriving at the logistics center.
XYZ Robotics says the system is currently running in production at the Krefeld facility, with the retailer using the integrated line for its day-to-day inbound operations.
