How The Field Of Robotics Is Benefiting From Advancements Made In Artificial Intelligence

February 25, 2019 by Nicola Harvey

Artificial intelligence and robotics result in a powerful combination when it comes to automating tasks both inside and outside the factory setting.

Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more present in recent years in robotic solutions, thus introducing learning capabilities and flexibility in what were consider rigid applications.

Despite the fact that artificial intelligence is still in its early stages and many have not yet felt the impact that artificial intelligence has, it has been a transformative technology when it comes to certain applications within the manufacturing sector.

Overall, there are a few main ways in which artificial intelligence is deployed in the global manufacturing sector of today. The first one is part of the assembly. Artificial intelligence is a very useful tool when it comes to robotic assembly applications.

When artificial intelligence gets combined with advanced vision systems, it can help with course correction in real time, something which is useful in particular in complex manufacturing sectors, such as the aerospace sector.

Artificial intelligence is also able to help a robot learn by itself while it’s in operation which paths are best for which processes.

Another area in which artificial intelligence is a presence and has its usefulness is in packaging. Robotic packaging is employing the use of forms of artificial intelligence frequently, in order to have more accurate packaging at a faster pace and for a lower cost.

Artificial intelligence is useful when it comes to saving certain motions that a robotic system is making, while at the same time refining them constantly, which in turn is making the installing stage and moving stage of robotic systems easier for anyone to do.

A third main area in which artificial intelligence makes its presence felt and has proved to be useful is in customer service.

Nowadays, robots are being used in a customer service capacity in hotels as well as retail stores all over the world. Most of the robots in question are leveraging the natural language processing abilities that artificial intelligence has in order to interact with the customers in a way that is more human.

Often times, the more the systems are able to interact with humans, the more they are learning.

A fourth and final main way in which artificial intelligence is deployed is in open source robotics. There are a handful of robotic systems on the market nowadays which are being sold as open source systems that have artificial intelligence capability.

As a result of this, users are able to teach their robots how to do custom tasks based on their specific application, for example, small-scale agriculture. This convergence of artificial intelligence and open source robotics could be a huge trend going forward as far as the future of AI robots is concerned.

When robots are working together they are more accurate, smarter, as well as more profitable. While artificial intelligence is not yet close enough when it comes to reaching its full potential, as it continues to advance, the field of robotics will advance alongside it.
