Demystifying Vehicle Impoundment in Jordan: Know the Process

July 29, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Vehicle Seizure is a critical aspect of traffic management and law enforcement in Jordan. Even so, understanding its regulations, procedures, and implications can help drivers avoid any potential penalties in the long run.

By this article, we will take a closer look at vehicle impoundment in Jordan, including the legal framework, steps and instructions to free an impounded vehicle.

Legal Framework

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has established a set of traffic laws and regulations to ensure road safety and maintain orderly traffic flow. However, some penalties are imposed for certain traffic violations, one of these penalties is vehicle impoundment.

Common Reasons for Vehicle Impoundment

Vehicles can be impounded for various reasons, including the following:

  • Using lanes designated for public transport without authorization.
  • Operating an unlicensed vehicle for public transportation to transport passengers in exchange for payment.
  • Transporting passengers exceeding the designated capacity, such as those for schools, kindergartens, and other educational institutions.
  • Driving a vehicle dangerously or recklessly on the road.
  • Driving a public vehicle with a driver’s license of the first, second, third, or seventh category.
  • If the vehicle is not registered according to the provisions of the Jordanian law.
  • If the driver is not licensed to drive.
  • If a public vehicle operates while its permit is suspended.
  • Use the vehicle for purposes other than those specified and permitted by its license.
  • Serious traffic violations, such as driving in the opposite direction on divided roads or operating in processions that obstruct traffic, can lead to impoundment.
  • Vehicles operating with forged, illegal, or without front and rear license plates can be impounded.
  • If more than 3 months have passed since the vehicle license expired.
  • Driving a vehicle that leaks oils, petroleum derivatives, or other hazardous substances onto the road, without proper warning and guidance labels, or without a permit to transport such substances.
  • Operating the vehicle and its cargo box beyond the legal dimensions without the required permit.
  • When public transport vehicles deviate from designated routes, change routes, fail to complete their designated routes, refuse to transport passengers, or pick them up without any valid reasons.

Note: Vehicle impoundment can last from 24 hours to 30 days, depending on some specific circumstances. The duration of impoundment is influenced by the violation and the applicable legal regulations.

Though, it’s important to follow all guidelines and provide the required documentation to ensure a smooth and easy process.

Steps to Retrieve Seized Cars in Jordan

To free an impounded vehicle, owners or drivers must follow specific procedures which go as follow:

  • Personal Identification: Present your ID to verify ownership.
  • Seizure Notice: Provide a copy of the vehicle seizure notice.
  • Pay Fines: Pay any fines at the fund’s accountant.
  • Inspection: Depending on the reason for impoundment, the vehicle may need to be inspected by a licensing representative or a notary.

Conclusion

Understanding of the requirements that are related to vehicle impoundment in Jordan is an essential aspect for all drivers in the kingdom. In addition to that, adhering to traffic laws can avoid getting yourself in any trouble in the future.
