RoboSense provides lidar for all-weather autonomous driving shuttle bus

RoboSense, a lidar perception technology solutions firm, has provided cold-resistant all-weather lidar for the world’s first autonomous driving shuttle bus.

The bus, named Gacha, is equipped with RoboSense’s  cold-resistant 16-beam mechanical lidar environment perception system for operating vehicles in harsh winter and other severe weather conditions.

The shuttle bus was designed in collaboration with Finnish autonomous driving company Sensible 4, which provided software for positioning, navigation, and obstacle detection; Muji, which provided expertise in design and user experience; and RoboSense.

Common ground: Are mobile robots technologically the same as autonomous cars?

For a long time, I’ve been wondering if an autonomous mobile robot – those small wheeled boxes you see moving shelf units and other items in warehouses – could be increased in size, then fitted with a car chassis and body, with a couple of seats inside, and marketed as a road-going, passenger-carrying autonomous vehicle. 

Yes, of course, some serious design refinements of the sketched out idea above would be required and a torrent of regulations would have to be navigated, but beyond that, the internal technologies would not need to change much because, fundamentally, they are the same. Right? Or not?

Actually, I don’t know. I’m not an engineer. But from what’s called a high-level perspective, both AMRs and autonomous vehicles are essentially the same thing or at least perform the same function – carry goods and people around autonomously. But it seems like a gap is opening up between what chatbots like Gemini, Claude an ChatGPT can do, and the capabilities of physical machines. The former are writing symphonies while the latter are struggling to stumble across an empty room.

Ethereum co-founder wants a more varied fee structure

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain, talked about gas fees and how to reduce them. Buterin informed the public about the possibility of the latest system having the ability to balance the issues people have with the current state of the gas charges that ETH buyers constantly complain about.

Ethereum fees have been a burning topic of discussion recently. It first boomed in 2021 with people complaining about the immensely high gas fees when Ethereum gas costs were at their acme.

Since then, it has reduced, but the fee is still pretty high on several trading websites like redot.com/eth2 and this remains a quandary for Buterin to solve.
