Robotic piece-picking: Inside the quest for human-level dexterity

June 16, 2025 by Sam Francis

Exploring the convergence of advanced grippers, 3D vision, and sophisticated AI that is enabling robots to handle an ever-wider variety of items with near-human skill

The relentless surge of global e-commerce has transformed our expectations for speed and convenience. But behind the one-click purchase lies a vast, complex, and physically demanding logistics network.

At its heart is a critical bottleneck: the manual, often strenuous task of piece picking. For decades, the simple act of identifying a specific item from a diverse jumble in a bin, grasping it securely, and placing it in a shipping container has remained stubbornly in the human domain.

Humans’ innate combination of sight, touch, and judgment has been the one ingredient that automation couldn’t replicate. Possibly until now. [Read more…] about Robotic piece-picking: Inside the quest for human-level dexterity

Humanoid robots could unlock $3 trillion US market, says Morgan Stanley

May 2, 2025 by Mark Allinson

A new, timely and detailed report outlines the rise of ‘embodied AI’ and maps the companies best positioned to lead the humanoid robotics revolution.

Humanoid robots could drive a $3 trillion total addressable market (TAM) in the United States alone, according to a new report by Morgan Stanley.

The global financial services company describes the emerging field as “embodied AI” – a combination of generative artificial intelligence and robotics hardware that may soon transform how labor is delivered across industries. IntuiCell unveils ‘world’s first’ digital intelligence that learns like a human brain

March 28, 2025 by David Edwards

IntuiCell, a Nordic deep-tech startup at the forefront of blending neuroscience and AI innovation, is announcing a world-first scientific and technological milestone: the development of digital intelligence capable of real-world, real-time learning.

This breakthrough by Intuicell, a spin-out of Sweden’s Lund University, marks a paradigm shift in its field: moving beyond static machine learning models (the mainstay of traditional AI) to a fully functional “digital nervous system” capable of scaling naturally to human-level intelligence.

Earlier this month, IntuiCell released the first video footage of an off-the-shelf robot quadruped (with no pre-programmed intelligence or instructions) which the company has augmented with a digital nervous system. Humanoid robots: Stepping out of science fiction, into the real world

December 10, 2024 by Mark Allinson

For many decades, science fiction films and books have described and shown us a variety of humanoid robots that range from ones that look clearly mechanical and follow simple orders and have limited functionality to ones that are indistinguishable from human beings in appearance but are far stronger, faster and more capable in many ways.

And over those decades, audiences have been encouraged to imagine such robots as figments of the imagination, something for the future – a future after our own lifetimes.

Now, however, instead of waiting there for us to die and spare us from having to deal with it, that future is hurtling towards us with unsettling speed.

Beyond Imagination receives order for 1,000 humanoid robots

August 5, 2022 by David Edwards

Robotics innovator Beyond Imagination has entered into an agreement with SELF Labs to provide at least 1,000 humanoid robots for use in agricultural “grow boxes”. This is believed to be the largest deal of its kind.

SELF and Beyond are announcing a partnership to develop automated off-the-grid grow boxes. Each box will be equipped with solar panels, windmills, atmospheric water generators, 5G, and an advanced version of Beyond Imagination’s Beomni robot with its Omni-Purpose AI Brain.

By aligning the visions of Milan Cheeks of SELF and Dr Harry Kloor of Beyond, this futuristic take on farming will be made possible through a uniquely powerful combination of Omni-Purpose AI, humanoid robotics, blockchain, and game technology. Volvo and Holcim partner on mining project to use autonomous electric haulers

February 14, 2022 by David Edwards

Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Holcim Switzerland have entered a collaboration to jointly test and further develop the use of autonomous electric haulers in a limestone quarry.

Holcim’s quarry Gabenchopf in Siggenthal, Switzerland has been chosen as the site for this project.

The battery-electric haulers currently being tested mark a groundbreaking step in the industry: not only are they quieter and more sustainable than conventional haulers, they are also safer – in fact, they are the world’s first commercially available CE-certified electric, autonomous transport solution for the quarry and cement industries. Elon Musk and his Tesla Bot: Will humanoid robots take over the world like all of science fiction predicts?

January 28, 2022 by Sam Francis

Arguably the world’s most visionary entrepreneur, Elon Musk, is rarely out of the news, whether it’s because of his super-duper Tesla electric cars or because of his achievements in aerospace, which include rockets and spacecraft built by his SpaceX company docking with and supplying the International Space Station.

In recent days, Musk has been in the news because of his reported comments about humanoid robots. According to Reuters and hundreds of other reputable news outlets, Musk believes humanoid robots will be an even bigger business than his Tesla car company, which at one stage was estimated to be the most valuable automaker in the world.

Musk unveiled his proposed humanoid robot – given the name “Tesla Bot” or “Optimus” for now – at a 3-hour stage presentation, which has been uploaded to YouTube. The machine is also mentioned on the Tesla company website. [Read more…] about Elon Musk and his Tesla Bot: Will humanoid robots take over the world like all of science fiction predicts?

The robot smiles back: Columbia scientists teach robot how to respond to human facial expressions

May 28, 2021 by Mark Allinson

Columbia Engineering researchers use AI to teach robots to make appropriate reactive human facial expressions, an ability that could build trust between humans and their robotic co-workers and care-givers. (See video below.)

While our facial expressions play a huge role in building trust, most robots still sport the blank and static visage of a professional poker player.

With the increasing use of robots in locations where robots and humans need to work closely together, from nursing homes to warehouses and factories, the need for a more responsive, facially realistic robot is growing more urgent. How modern robots are developed: ‘Human cyborgs will become commonplace’

February 5, 2021 by Editor

Today, neuroscience and robotics are developing hand in hand. Mikhail Lebedev, academic supervisor at HSE University’s Centre for Bioelectric Interfaces, spoke about how studying the brain inspires the development of robots.

Robots are interesting to neuroscience and neuroscience is interesting to robots – this is what the article “Neuroengineering challenges of fusing robotics and neuroscience” was about in the journal Science Robotics.

Such collaborative development contributes to progress in both fields, bringing us closer to developing more advanced android robots and a deeper understanding of the structure of the human brain. And, to some extent, to combining biological organisms with machines, to create cybernetic organisms (cyborgs).
