Kuka wins massive order from BMW for 5,000 robots

Industrial automation specialist Kuka and Munich-based automotive company BMW have signed a framework agreement for the supply of around 5,000 robots for new production lines and factories.

The Kuka industrial robots will be used around the world at the international production sites of the BMW Group for the manufacture of the current and future generations of vehicle models.

The various robot models from Kuka will be used primarily in body-in-white production and other technologies.

The scope of supply also includes other innovative products from the Kuka portfolio such as Kuka linear units.

These linear units significantly increase the workspace of the robot. They are controlled by the same controller as the robot.

This allows them to be integrated into work sequences without the need for additional equipment.

Energy supply packages developed by Kuka are also included in the scope of supply.

Peter Mohnen, CEO of Kuka, says: “Thanks to its expertise, Kuka has been a long-standing and experienced partner to the automotive industry.

“For more than 40 years now, BMW has relied on Kuka technology from Augsburg. We are delighted by the successful continuation of this partnership.”
