Smart cities: Enticing visions of super-clean, safe and high-tech cities of the future

September 5, 2018 by Abdul Montaqim

Light trails above buildings at night in China.

Smart cities promise enormous improvements in the quality of life and huge efficiencies in the way large, metropolitan areas are run.

Technologies are being developed and implemented now that can help monitor and manage almost everything in a smart city, from waste and energy, to traffic and crime.

But, according to a McKinsey report, we are still currently “seeing only a preview” of what technology could eventually do in the urban environment.  [Read more…] about Smart cities: Enticing visions of super-clean, safe and high-tech cities of the future

Drive.ai to test autonomous car in Texas

September 5, 2018 by Anna

Drive.ai’s coming expansion of its self-driving car pilot to Arlington, Texas, isn’t its first driverless foray, but the testing, taking place between Dallas and Fort Worth, will validate its vehicles’ ability to handle a crowded entertainment district and process all the data that comes with it.

After launching its maiden pilot in nearby Frisco in July, Drive.ai said it would extend its ride-hailing trial to the south, with three autonomous vans offering free rides to Arlington residents and visitors for one year, starting 19 October.

The vans, which use Nvidia’s compute technology, will operate within a geo-fenced area, travelling up to 35 miles per hour with human supervisors on board for the initial phase.

Intel unveils ‘world’s densest’ and silent Solid State Drive

September 5, 2018 by Anna

Fast disappearing from data centres are power-hungry spinning hard disk drives that hum, buzz, run warm (or even hot), require fans and expensive cooling systems, and can crash unexpectedly.

Intel’s newest solid state drive, the PCIe-based QLC Intel SSD D5-P4326, is about the size of an old-fashioned 12-inch ruler, and can store 32 terabytes. That’s equivalent to triple the entire printed collection of the US Library of Congress.

The new SSD is Intel’s densest drive ever, and is built on Intel 3D NAND technology, which stacks memory cells atop each other in multiple extremely thin layers, instead of just one. Memory cells in the D5-P4326 are stacked 64 layers deep.
