Kuka has inaugurated its prestigious new building at its Augsburg headquarters, which it calls the Development and Technology Center.

The company celebrated the opening with about 200 guests from the worlds of business and politics.

The robotics and automation specialist put on an event wholly dedicated to its technologies, products and solutions for Industrie 4.0 and, by association, the digitization of production.

As proponents of digital development, Günther Oettinger, EU commissioner for digital economy and society, and Ilse Aigner, Bavaria’s minister for economic affairs, shared their viewpoints on Industrie 4.0 in their speeches.

Robots in architecture was one of the topics of the keynote speaker, Professor Sigrid Brell-Cokcan from RWTH Aachen.

After a construction period of roughly two years, the first employees were able to move into the building on schedule at the end of 2015. The Development and Technology Center bundles Kuka’s research and development activities, which are at the core of the technology company.

With floor space of 39,000 square meters, the open-concept building provides around 850 staff members with a suitable setting for the creativity, innovative thinking and interdisciplinary cooperation they need to shape Industrie 4.0.

It is to be the birthplace of further innovations and tomorrow’s products. Furthermore, the DTC houses an impressive showroom and Kuka College, where between 6,000 and 7,000 customer employees are to undergo training each year.

Kuka has grown worldwide in recent years. The company has a global workforce of 12,000, with around 3,000 at the Augsburg site.

Dr Till Reuter, CEO of Kuka, says: “The construction of the Development and Technology Center is a clear investment in the future. Our traditional location in Augsburg is the basis for our global success.”
