Foxconn, the Taiwanese manufacturing giant which makes Apple devices among other things, is considering its locations, incentives and other options for establishing manufacturing facilities in the US.

Among the locations being discussed are two cities in Oakland County, in the state of Michigan; and the amounts being mentioned range from $4.2 billion to $7 billion.

The Crain’s Detroit website reported that Foxconn’s expansion would create 2,000 to 5,000 jobs in the southeast Michigan area, but the situation is fast moving.  Continue reading Foxconn considers options for establishing multi-billion-dollar manufacturing facilities in the US

Opinion: Industry 4.0 is transforming manufacturing – but the cyber threats are increasing

cyber-security-2

By Mirko Brandner, technical manager, Arxan Technologies

If you attended this years’ Hannover Messe, the leading international trade fair for industrial technology, you will have seen fully developed “Industry 4.0” techniques on demonstration. Coined at the Hannover Messe five years ago, Industry 4.0 represents the fourth industrial revelation, driven by data and automation.

This futuristic idea has now become a reality and these new techniques are leading the way to a fully digitised, intelligent manufacturing plant. Mobile ultrasound measuring devices for foresighted machine maintenance, smart liquid analysis, driverless forklifts and even collaborating robots – these were just a few of the new systems and equipment on show.

To remain competitive, companies need to embrace digitisation. The fusion of IT and automated engineering has resulted in intelligent collaboration of all components involved in the production process, this promises an increase in efficiency, flexible resource management and the individualisation of mass production.  Continue reading Opinion: Industry 4.0 is transforming manufacturing – but the cyber threats are increasing

Giant distribution centers look to robots to deal with increasing e-commerce orders

Changes taking place in consumer behavior have drawn a new map, a new type of building and a new kind of automation for the retail sector.

Growth has taken place in both the number and size of the facilities that turn e-commerce orders into product deliveries. The distribution center, or operation fulfillment center, is increasingly emerging in locations that experience low real estate costs, offer tax incentives to locate there, have an available workforce for seasonal surges and offer multiple ways of transporting goods from their locations.

In the US, that means areas close to major metropolises, such as New Jersey and Oakland, CA, Midwestern hubs that are unencumbered by traffic-congested highways, such as Omaha, NB and Kansas City, MO, and traditional port cities such as Houston, TX, Norfolk, VA, and Savannah, GA. The new engineering center will design, build and certify custom equipment on site in days

Pepperl+Fuchs, a provider of process automation and applications, is building a 110,000-square-foot facility in Katy, Texas, in the West Ten Business Park near Houston.

The new facility, which will replace an existing 20,000-square-foot space, will house an expanded Solutions Engineering Center, a customer training area, warehouse space and distribution facilities.

A quickly expanding service from Pepperl+Fuchs, the Solutions Engineering Center is staffed with a team of engineers, who design, build and certify customized solutions on site for process automation in hazardous locations, such as oil refineries, pharmaceutical facilities and other manufacturing facilities.  Continue reading Pepperl+Fuchs to construct a 110,000-square-foot facility in Houston with an expanded engineering center

The IoT brings industry revolution and risk at the same time

Industrial control systems could become more vulnerable to cyberattack as they become more connected through the industrial internet of things
Industrial control systems could become more vulnerable to cyberattack as they become more connected through the industrial internet of things

The internet of things is enabling industry to connect individual robotic and automated work cells with other similar cells to create multicellular organisms within what could now be referred to as “smart factories”, particularly as the factory building itself can be connected to those multicellular organisms operating within its walls.

Not only that, those smart factories can themselves be connected to other smart factories within the body of the industrial company’s entire estate, which itself is all wired up to what could be called a central nervous system.

Yes, industrial control systems are going through an evolutionary phase the like of which has never been seen before in industry, all brought about by the IoT.  Continue reading The IoT brings industry revolution and risk at the same time

Fanuc to open new industrial robot facilities and restructure business locations

FANUC Robotics America

The world’s largest industrial robot company is restructuring its business operations.

Fanuc America will open four new facilities, relocate three facilities to larger offices, and add three new regional training centers in 2016. The expansion will allow the company to better serve its growing customer base, says Fanuc.  Continue reading Fanuc to open new industrial robot facilities and restructure business locations
