Orthopedic surgical robots to carry out joint replacement with precision

Various advanced tools and techniques have been implemented by orthopedic surgeons over the past decade to improve patient outcomes.

These tools and techniques help them in improving patient outcomes and offer comfort to patients during treatment. The orthopedic surgery robots use the 3D imaging technology and computer navigation techniques to improve ability of surgeons to place implants with precise alignment.

Many studies have shown that these techniques are safer and more effective as compared to traditional surgical techniques.

David Bortel, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at MidMichigan Medical Center at Midland, says: “In reality, patients are reporting comparable mobility, functionality and quality of life.

“The good news is that long-term clinical studies are ongoing and will help guide our future decision-making regarding the use of these various computer-aided technologies. The thought is that even a few degrees of improved alignment may enhance implant longevity.”

Though emerging technology does not guarantee better results, robotics has always been effective in hip and knee replacement surgeries. Improvements in technology and new methods of verification for implant sizing and placement are significant for patients and surgeons.

Currently, three techniques have emerged in joint implant placement technologies. In the first technique, intraoperative computer aided three-dimensional image is used and verified with specific identifiable bone landmarks.

Once it is verified and landmarks are consistent with 3D images, joint implant is carried out. In the second technique, patient specific jigs/guides are used with the help of MRI or CT scan pre-operative 3D imaging to create a model of arthritic joint. A virtual joint replacement surgery is carried out on computer prior to surgery.

In the third technique, robots are used with the help of MRI or CT scan 3D imaging.  This robot-assisted technique is similar to the first two techniques, stated Dr Bortel.

Though this technique is time consuming, the cost of equipment is high, and takes considerable space, the benefits help surgeons to place implants precisely achieving maximum accuracy in alignment. Each of aforementioned technologies has pros and cons. Although none of these computer-aided technologies have emerged as the most helpful and precise, many joint replacement surgeries are conducted with the help of traditional techniques.

No standards exist to confirm the best outcomes of any technique. Consumer marketing remains the only way that helps people in making decision on which technique is better than another as there is no specific clinical data that outlines the superiority of clinical outcomes of a particular technique.

With advancements in technology, new techniques are emerging for verifying appropriate implant sizing and placement.
